Let me tell you straight forward, that you can keep on doing your daily tasks and still squeeze in some time for making music. You can take care of your music projects without sacrificing everything else that you may do.
This guide will outline 7 simple steps that you need to consider when joining the Music World. If I would need to jump into the Music Industry myself today, this guide is exactly what I would need. It’s written to help you save at least time, energy and money.
Disclaimer: This guide can’t guarantee your musical success. It will provide you the tools to start making it happen, but if or when it does is entirely up to you.
So, let’s jump right into it!
Step 1: What would you like to do in your music career?
Like any other industry, there are plenty of opportunities out there. What would you like to be?
- Singer
- Composer
- Audio Engineer
- Songwriter
- Producer
- DJ
- Promoter
- Agent
- Art designer (err… what?)
- Photographer (… how are the last two related to music?)
One does not exclude the others, you would like for example singing, composing and songwriting. Make your choice and jumpstart your music career!
Step 2: Where could you fit in?
There are also multiple sub-branches, if you like, in which you could fit in.
- Singing: vocals, diverse musical instruments – Guitar, Drums, Bassoon, Violin, Piano, etc.
- Composing for: classic guitar, piano, strings, full orchestra, diverse musicians (groups)
- Audio Engineer: recording, mixing, mastering
- Songwriting: writing songs and lyrics for diverse genres: Pop, Rock, RNB, etc.
- Producing: helping songs reach a wider audience and make them sound better (so what does better sounding mean, right?)
- DJ: play music to people and make them feel better 🙂
- Promoter: working with agents and other parties to set up concerts, negotiate deals and promote bands
- Agent: working with bands and other involved parties to set up tour dates while covering the financial and logistics aspects of it
- Art designer: designs artwork for a band or musician. Better music understanding results in a more appropriate artwork
- Photographer: creating much-desired media material for marketing purposes
You can sing multiple instruments and track vocals at the same time. Or can be a producer, mixing and mastering engineer. Because perhaps you can write music for the strings section of the orchestra and attend concerts to take photos or shoot music videos. You can be what you want to be!
Step 3: Why should you jumpstart your music career?
You’ve probably asked yourself before or you are doing it now:
- Why should I start, or continue my music career, if there is so much music out there already? If there are such great artists? Is anyone going to listen to me, or my music?
- Who is going to come to me and have their song mixed? Because there are these great studios with this expensive hardware… I can’t compete with them, that’s insane.
The whos and the whys are without end. Thing is, if you won’t do it, you’ll never know. If you’ve done it with no results, it’s because you haven’t done it for long enough. All these questions don’t matter. This is what matters: do you have a passion for music, or you don’t. That’s it! If you decide this now, you know what to do next!
If you are passionate about music, the best time to start or resume your music career is now! Why?
- The Internet is your audience: You can share your product more easily than ever before with everybody.
- Cheap gear: You can buy cheap music gear today, that can do what only expensive gear could only a decade ago.
- Comfort: You don’t have to necessarily travel to professional studios to record your music, because you can do it in your own bedroom.
- Accessibility: If you own a computer, you can start creating music today, with minimal to 0 investment.
Step 4: What do I need to do?
Ok, ok, so if I want to start today, what do I need to do?
- Gather as much information as possible about what you like to do and never stop learning
For example, if you want to be a professional singer, learn about singing on pitch, on the beat, and diverse techniques. Likewise, as a guitarist, learn the chords, check out the diverse techniques.
- Know or learn your gear
Ex.: Learn what your audio interface can do. Know your plugins and other recording equipment in order to obtain your desired sound.
Step 5: Jumpstart!
Start doing what you want to do! Jumpstart your Music Career!
- Get your guitar and start playing! Start exercising those vocals! Finish up some mixes!
What will you notice?
- You will get better! If you keep up to it, you will always see improvement! The only way to get better is to start and keep doing it! It’s no other way. It’s exactly like any other job or hobby. You can’t just go and build a house today, because you will have no idea how to build it. Or you will and it will fall into pieces.
- For instance, you will get more ideas! As you start experimenting with your instrument, you’ll start using complex vocal techniques, or find more ways to enhance your mix. You will compose a masterpiece! From where can all of those arise? You guessed it! By starting and doing it!
- You will be happier, and your satisfaction will increase with each new thing that you learn, with each new wave that sounds better. However, avoid giving in to frustration! It doesn’t matter that X or Y is doing it better. The only thing that’s important is that YOU work on your passion and YOU are getting better.
- You’re figuring out what you want to do! Being a rock star is not for everybody. Do you really want to travel all year long and have one concert a day and see your family once every 4 Months? Maybe you do, but maybe you don’t. It can be that you discover you are better at writing for the Cello from the comfort of your home studio. Maybe you find out that you’re more satisfied by tracking your own songs in your bedroom and uploading them on Spotify. Similarly, maybe you are just a guy who likes to play in your local town’s orchestra.
Step 6: But when?
This is the most important question when it comes to music. Life is busy, we all know it. But imagine this: 30 Minutes each day dedicated to your Music Career means 3,5 Hours a Week, which is about 14 Hours a Month. It’s not unrealistic to squeeze in 30 Minutes a day, therefore I think it’s very doable. 14 Hours a Month can mean that you:
- Finish a mix
- Write a song
- Track the vocals for your album
Or any other music activity that you want to get done, you CAN get it done! There is no demand to sacrifice your other activities because you can do all of this by simply proper timing.
Step 7: What about the future? Any chance of success?
Success in the Music Industry is hard. There is great work out there that consumers always reference when they hear something new because the standards are so high that it’s very hard to reach or go over them. Above all, new artists arise every day. With every new artist, there is another bunch of people that find success: producers, mixing engineers, bass players, and songwriters – you name it. These high standards didn’t stop them to reach success, why should they stop you?
- Do you need talent? Maybe. But you also need lots of work. Do you think Michael Jackson just walked up the stage and started to Moonwalk?
- Do you need to invest money to buy expensive gear? Maybe. But you also need to know how to use them. There are lots of people who get better results with cheap, than others with expensive gear.
- Does everybody need to like your music? Definitely not! This does not happen with anything in the world.
- What happens if I fail? Nothing! So, I think failure is hard to define. If you launch one single and you get 0 hits… that’s not a failure, that is no advertisement. Getting a lot of dislikes… no failure, and the wrong audience. Failure can be NOT doing what you like to do.
- I like my songs, I want to make them sound better, but I don’t know how. Do you know all those Producers and Audio Engineers out there? They can help you do just that because you don’t have to know or do everything. In fact, that is very counterproductive. You may spend some money on it, sure, but if you think about the time that you save, it may be worth it. It also gives you time to focus on the things that matter to you.
